What is Insert Injection Molding?

It’s a process where plastic is molded or formed around non-plastic parts, which are commonly called inserts. Typically the inserted component is placed in tooling with an opening. The plastic enters through the opening and encapsulates the inserted piece wholly or in areas designated by the tooling.

Insert injection molding is limited only by the tooling used to create the finished part. As a result, it’s perfect for components with basic or complex geometries. Some examples include:

  • Pins
  • Fittings
  • Screws
  • Housings
  • Studs
  • Surface Mount Pads
  • Fasteners
  • Magnets
  • Bushings
  • Tubes
  • Contacts
  • Clips

Why Combine Metal And Plastics?

Metallic parts encapsulated by plastic can provide a wide range of benefits to a process or application, such as improving reliability, impact resistance, and weight. Most plastics can withstand exposure to moisture, chemicals, and ultraviolet light, meaning they can better protect the metal from the elements.

Another benefit of insert injection molding is increasing part compatibility. Some metals just don’t work well together, and direct contact may cause issues like corrosion or degradation. With insert injection molding, plastic can cover the surfaces of mating parts.
